Damrivi implemented a Child Counselling Course with Buddhist Insights for the benefit of Children affected by the Tsunami in 2005. The Course was made available free of charge for 34 trainees from Tsunami affected areas of the Country.
Counselling Training
In 2004 Damrivi pioneered a professional training course in counseling integrating Buddhist insights and therapies with western counseling theories and therapies. The course is aimed at producing culturally friendly professional counsellors and thus contribute to promoting mental health in the country. The course which commenced as a 9 month certificate course with 230 hrs has today developed into a 1 ½ yr Diploma Course of 500 hrs including theory, practical training , field placements and apprenticeship. The course is registered under the Tertiary and Vocational Training Commission ( TVEC) of Sri Lanka.
Damrivi is the first and the only organization in Sri Lanka to develop and deliver a professional counselling course with Buddhist inputs.
Buddhism with its very advanced analyses of the human mind and its illnesses has ample resources to enrich a programme on counselling. But so far such resources have not been used in developing counselling programs in our country. The use of Buddhist inputs in developing a counselling programme is very appropriate as Buddhism is a universally accepted doctrine of psychoanalysis. The wisdom of this ancient philosophy is increasingly recognized by modern psychiatrists, psycho-therapists and psychologists both in the East and the West as having profound relevance in modern society. Western clinical psychologists, theorists and researchers have incorporated Buddhist practices in widespread formalized psychotherapies.
Currently Damrivi is conducting its 11th counselling course. To date Damrivi has trained over 200 counsellors from across the country from Tissamaharama to Vavuniya and the course has attracted many non-Buddhists. Damrivi counseling training is followed by health personnel such as doctors, nurses, psycho-social workers, speech therapists and professionals from various fields such as education, law, marketing, human resource management and uniformed services. Among the trainees are bhikkus and bhikkunis. Damrivi has had a very close partnership with the Civil Defense Force of Sri Lanka training many youth from rural areas specially from the conflict affected areas to deal with the stresses of life. The panel of lecturers and resource persons who conduct the course are the best trainers in this country and represent Buddhist academia, academics from the field of psychiatry, psychiatric practitioners from the field and from the National Institute of Mental Health, consultant community health physicians and counsellors.
In addition to the regular counselling Diploma, Damrivi has also developed and delivered special courses such as Certificate Course for Child counselling with Buddhist insights and counselling for women affected by Trauma.
These counsellors who pass out are engaged by Damrivi for its island-wide counselling activities and in its counselling center situated at Isipathana Mawatha, Colombo 5, to promote mental health. These services are free of charge to all, irrespective of class, creed or race to promote.
We continue to keep our counsellors updated with continued professional education through our Counsellors Association.

මිනිසුන්ෙග් ඒදිෙනදා කටයුතුවලදී අැතිවන බාධක හැලහැප්පිම් මත චිත්ත පීඩා මානසික දුක්ඛ ෙදා්මනස්සයන් දුරු කර ගැනීමට සහනය ෙසායා පන්සලට දිව ඒන මහජනතාවෙග් දුක් ගැනවිලි වලට අැහුමිකන් දිමට අපට සිදු වී තිෙබ්. ඒහිදි ඔවුන්ෙග් විවිධ ප්රශ්න ගැටලු වලට නිවැරදි පිළිතුරු සැපයීමට නිවැරදි දැනුමක් ෙනාතිෙහාත් තව තවත් ප්රශ්න වැඩිවීමට ෙහ්තු ෙව්. දම්රිවි පදනෙමි පැවැත්වු උපෙද්ශන පාඨමාලාව තුළින් මම ෙපෟද්ගලිකව අලුත් දැනුමක් ලබා ගතිමි. මහජනතාවට උපෙද්ශනය සැපයීමට ෙපර මාෙග් ජීවිතෙෙය් තිබු වැරදි මත නිවැරදි කර ගතිමි. මිනිසුන් වැරදි වලට ෙයාමු විමට ෙහ්තුව ෙසායා බලා ඔවුන් ෙකෙරහි කරුණාෙවන් ෙමත් සිතින් බැලීමට අැහුමිකන් දීමට ඉවසීම කැපවීම අැති කර ගතිමි. දරුණු අපරාධ වලට ෙයා්මු වු අය ෙකෙරහි පවා ෙමත් සිතින් බැලීමට හැකි වූෙය් ෙමම පා්ඨමාලාෙවන් පසුවයි.
ෙමවැනි පිරිස් හමුෙව් උපෙද්ශනය ලබා දීමට දම්රිවි පදනෙම් පාඨමාලාව මට ෙබාෙහා් උපකාරෙවිය. සැබවින්ම උපෙද්ශනය ලබාගත් පිරිස් අතුරින් 95 % තමාට සහනයක් ලැබුණු බව පැවසීෙමන් මා හිතනවා මා ලැබූ දැනුම ෙහාද නිවැරදි දැනුමක් කියලා.

It was the Buddhist aspect...
It was the Buddhist aspect in the study programme that attracted me to it. And what I received in terms of a knowledge base and understanding was at a level that I had not expected. The familiar fundamental concepts of Buddhism as well as Suttas that I was totally unfamiliar with were presented and discussed in a way that allowed the simple every day relevance of it as well as the depth and complexity to be appreciated simultaneously.

it was I who got counselled...
I was born a Buddhist. But it took me almost a life time to understand what the Buddha meant. The Buddhist meditation programme at Damrivi opened to me the proper perspective of who I am, what I am doing and where I am headed. The jewel of the crown was the very intensive year-long Diploma in Counselling with Buddhist insights. Though I am a counselor now with the knowledge to help others in distress, it was I who got counselled during that year when Me and I , myself and mine came face to face with reality as shown by the Buddha. Now I know the way to that destination. Thank you Damrivi for clarifying the Buddha’s way, for giving me nourishment, courage and clarity to proceed on that journey.

I found it very inspiring...
I found the Psychological Programme at Damrivi very inspiring. Not only with regard to Counseling but also for my personal research in to Buddhism. For example I understood that the circuit that the mental events form in any habit, i.e. the dependence on alcohol. It occurred to me therefore that the circuit of Samsara is not different. Also hitherto I had no clear idea how central the subject of bio-psychology is to the Buddhist Philosophy, and how crucial it is for deliverance.
